Why Did He Come?
I started reading the book, When Helping Hurts (by Corbett & Fikkert) in prep for a trip to the Dominican Republic. One of the initial questions they ask is, “Why did Jesus come to the earth?” I admit, my response was, “to seek and to save the lost.” The authors point to the passage in Luke 4:17-21 when Jesus opens up the scrolls and reads from Isaiah:
The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
Jesus goes on to say, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus came to care for the poor, to be a freedom fighter, and to heal the sick. When the poor or sick look at me, do they see Jesus?
